Fluoride treatment in corticosteroid induced osteoporosis.

Severe osteoporosis with multiple vertebral fractures occurred in two girls receiving prolonged high dose corticosteroids for relapsing dermatomyositis. Sodium fluoride, supplemented with calcium and vitamin D, helped control secondary osteoporosis in one case and should be considered as part of the curative treatment of corticoid induced osteoporosis.

Prevention and Treatment of Corticosteroid-Induced Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is one of the most serious complications of corticosteroid treatment. Loss of bone mineral density (BMD) and fractures occur early in the course of corticosteroid treatment, and thus early recognition of fracture risk and effective intervention based on evidence-based-medicine (EBM) are needed. A study of meta-analysis representing the highest level in a hierarchy of evidence showe...

Intermittent etidronate therapy to prevent corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS Osteoporosis is a recognized complication of corticosteroid therapy. Whether it can be prevented is not known. We conducted a 12-month, randomized, placebo-controlled study of intermittent etidronate (400 mg per day for 14 days) followed by calcium (500 mg per day for 76 days), given for four cycles, in 141 men and women (age, 19 to 87 years) who had recently begun high-d...

Osteoporosis and long-term corticosteroid therapy.

Sequential measurements of total body calcium by in-vivo neutron activation analysis were made in five patients treated with corticosteroid drugs for severe inflammatory disease. No evidence of osteoporosis was seen to develop during the course of 20-33 months of study. In one case a substantial rise in total body calcium was found.

Is addition of sodium fluoride to cyclical etidronate beneficial in the treatment of corticosteroid induced osteoporosis?

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether administration of sodium fluoride (NaF) in addition to cyclical etidronate has a positive effect on bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with established osteoporosis during continued treatment with corticosteroids. PATIENTS AND METHODS 47 patients who were receiving treatment with corticosteroids were included in a two year randomised, double blind, placebo...
